- AI chat systems are being used to write and devise material that can be used by researchers and others to explain and explore issues. The capacity of these systems to search for answers and express perspectives has developed rapidly over the past few years, with many concluding that such systems can now not only mimic humans but may also ‘outperform’ them. In this chapter, the capacity of AI to construct and devise material that reflects some judgment about the Anthropocene and speculate about what 2050 forms of AI might conclude about the Anthropocene is explored. Using existing forms of simplistic AI, as represented by AI writers, the author has constructed a judgment that imagines how a 2050 AI Judge might ‘judge’ the Anthropocene. There are several issues with this approach, including the concerns that AI systems may only consider narrow sources and may at times be ‘incorrect’. In addition, as with humans, such systems may exhibit biases and can lack a capacity for deeper analysis and interrogation. That is, such systems may accept that because something is stated on a sufficient number of websites that are ranked as authoritative, that the material must be correct. Initially, AI systems are considered in the context of the developments of AI writers before considering the phenomena of Judge AI and the draft material formulated by an AI writer.
